German present-tense stem-vowel change verbs

Some irregular verbs change their stem vowel in the Präsens (present tense). This is easy to miss, because the vowel changes only in two forms: du and er/sie/es. The other forms (ich, wir, ihr, sie/Sie) keep the vowel: ich fahre, but du fährst.

These are the most common changes:

  • a → ä: fahren → du fährst
  • e → i: sprechen → du sprichst
  • e → ie: sehen → du siehst

Less often, the change is au → äu (laufen → du läufst) or o → ö (stoßen → du stößt). The table below lists the main verbs of this type that beginners need.
