German conjunctions

German conjunctions fall into three groups. Each group affects word order in its own way:

  • Coordinating conjunctions (koordinierende Konjunktionen: und, aber, oder, denn, sondern) don't change the word order.
  • Conjunctional adverbs (Konjunktionaladverbien: deshalb, trotzdem and others) cause inversion. The conjugated verb comes right after them, and the subject comes after the verb.
  • Subordinating conjunctions (Subjunktionen: weil, dass and others) send the conjugated verb to the end of the subordinate clause.

A word-order mistake is easy to hear, even when the conjunction itself is correct. So learn each conjunction together with its group. For the general word-order rule, see "German word order".
