German Konjunktiv II¶
Konjunktiv II (the subjunctive) is a verb form for three situations:
- polite requests: "could you…";
- soft advice and guesses;
- unreal conditions: "if I had time…".
In everyday speech, mainly eight verbs use their own Konjunktiv II form: können, müssen, dürfen, sollen, mögen, haben, sein and werden. würde comes from werden. For other verbs, the own form sounds bookish: er käme. So people use würde + Infinitiv instead: er würde kommen.
Modal verbs¶
| Infinitiv | ich | du | er/sie/es | wir | ihr | sie/Sie | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| können | könnte | könntest | könnte | könnten | könntet | könnten | can, be able to (possibility) |
| müssen | müsste | müsstest | müsste | müssten | müsstet | müssten | have to (an external obligation/deadline) |
| dürfen | dürfte | dürftest | dürfte | dürften | dürftet | dürften | be allowed to |
| sollen | sollte | solltest | sollte | sollten | solltet | sollten | ought to (advice) |
| mögen | möchte | möchtest | möchte | möchten | möchtet | möchten | would like (a polite wish) |
In Konjunktiv II, all five modal verbs sound polite and soft, so they are easy to mix up. Look at where the limit or the wish comes from:
- a rule or permission from another person (a doctor, a boss, a law) → dürfte;
- a physical or technical possibility → könnte;
- a duty or a deadline → müsste;
- advice or a recommendation → sollte;
- your own wish → möchte.
haben, sein, werden¶
| Infinitiv | ich | du | er/sie/es | wir | ihr | sie/Sie | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| haben | hätte | hättest | hätte | hätten | hättet | hätten | to have |
| sein | wäre | wärst | wäre | wären | wärt | wären | to be |
| werden | würde | würdest | würde | würden | würdet | würden | the auxiliary behind würde + Infinitiv |
es gibt → es gäbe¶
The eight-verb rule has one important exception: the phrase es gibt (there is, there are). Its Konjunktiv II is the own form of geben: es gäbe. It follows the same umlaut rule: gab → gäbe. In everyday speech, es gäbe sounds natural. es würde … geben also exists, but it is less common. In the past, the form is es hätte … gegeben.
- Wenn es hier einen Bäcker gäbe, würde ich jeden Morgen frische Brötchen kaufen. — If there were a bakery here, I'd buy fresh rolls every morning.
- Gäbe es eine bessere Lösung, hätten wir sie schon gefunden. — If there were a better solution, we'd have found it already.
- Ohne deine Hilfe hätte es dieses Projekt nie gegeben. — Without your help, this project would never have existed.
Unreal conditions (Wenn-Sätze)¶
The subordinate clause with wenn takes Konjunktiv II. The main clause takes würde + Infinitiv or the own form of one of the eight verbs.
- Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich mehr lesen. — If I had more time, I would read more.
- Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich nicht mehr arbeiten. — If I were rich, I wouldn't work anymore.
- Wenn du an meiner Stelle wärst, würdest du genauso handeln. — If you were in my place, you'd do the same.
Konjunktiv II in the past¶
Konjunktiv II also has a past form. You need it for unreal conditions in the past and for regrets about something that happened or didn't happen. The form is hätte or wäre plus the Partizip II of the main verb. hätte and wäre are the forms of haben and sein from the table above. You choose between them as in the Perfekt.
- Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, hätte ich anders reagiert. — If I had known that, I would have reacted differently.
- Wenn du früher losgefahren wärst, hättest du den Zug nicht verpasst. — If you had left earlier, you wouldn't have missed the train.
- Ich wäre gern gekommen, aber ich hatte keine Zeit. — I would have liked to come, but I didn't have time.
Modal verbs form the past differently. Instead of gekonnt or gemusst, they use the Infinitiv of the modal verb. The form is hätte + the Infinitiv of the main verb + the Infinitiv of the modal verb. This is called the double infinitive (Ersatzinfinitiv).
- Ich hätte dir helfen können. — I could have helped you (but didn't).
- Du hättest das nicht sagen sollen. — You shouldn't have said that.
In a subordinate clause, the conjugated verb usually goes to the very end. With a double infinitive, this rule doesn't apply: hätte comes before the two infinitives. Say …, weil ich das hätte wissen müssen, not …, weil ich das wissen müssen hätte.
